As you may have read in previous posts, the goal at Yacolt Mountain Farm and Nursery is to be a horse powered farm. The first step to accomplishing this of course is acquiring a horse and so we did. After much searching we found Lucy, a 14 year old Suffolk Punch mare who sure looks strong. We brought her home at the end of June and have been getting to know her little by little. Although I grew up riding and competing with light horses and have been around horses growing up, neither Dan or myself have really had much experience driving a draft horse. We have a good friend who is willing to teach us what we need to know, but since he does a lot of haying and it is haying time right now we have not really had to chance to start. However, we have spent quite a bit of time walking her around the farm getting her acquainted with ourselves and the land and she seems to be getting comfortable at her new home. We are hoping to get her into the harness soon though and do some work together. |
