Although we had that one incident (see previous post) the dogs are actually very affectionate with the sheep. They just don't understand that the sheep don't like to play like they do and they don't like their hair to be pulled. We've adapted a new approach to balancing their puppy energy and their time with the lamb. Every morning and every evening we run the dogs along the perimeter of the property. They run until they are out of breath and ready to settle down. Since we want them to be with the lamb, we tie them up and attach a log on their collar when they are with the lamb, which discourages them playing with them. When we are able to supervise them we let the loose with the lamb and make sure they are calm and don't run or harass the lamb. We hope they will outgrow these puppy tendencies and have read that they are fairly normal though obviously not something to leave uncorrected. Here are some cute pictures of the bunch. |
